The Power of negative thoughts

The power of negative thoughts is amazing. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a model utilized by many clinicians practicing in mental health. This model, in so many other words follows the belief that we have certain disruptive (irrational) negative thoughts that lead to certain emotions and thus result in certain behaviors we engage in. If we are able to challenge these thoughts we could live a more rewarding and fuller life.

This all came about from an article posted in PsychCentral. They named 27 example of thoughts that could disable anyone from feeling happy. This is their list:

1. When I am happy, bad news is coming, because happiness can’t last.

2. When I am happy, I am setting myself up for disappointment.

3. When I am happy, people expect more of me.

4. When I am happy, I have no excuse to be lazy.

5. When I am happy, I am letting my negligent parents off the hook.

6. When I am happy, it will draw too much attention to me.

7. When I am happy, I’ll have to be nice to people I don’t like.

12. When I am happy, I’ll have to let go of the past.

13. When I am happy, I am in denial of something.
